Types of Music Videos

Types of Music Video: Performance, Narrative and Conceptual

Performance Music Videos

These videos usually show the band or artist performing the song some where, e.g. on a stage.
  • It's the cheapest and easiest type of video to make, providing the location is suitable for it to be filmed at.
  • To make these videos more interesting to the audience, lots of shots are used in quick succession as there’s a risk that the videos would be boring if it were slower paced.
  • Mainly these types of videos are combined with short clips of footage from somewhere else to maintain the audience’s attention.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     An Example of a performance music video is Time-Bomb by All Time Low

Narrative Music Videos

These music videos often consist of footage that shows an ongoing story running through the video; sometimes there are several story lines that run parallel to each other.
  • Either the artists themselves or actors play a role in the music video in which the story line may link to the lyrics of the song or the overall theme.
  • The video will usually edit some clips in of the film into the video if it’s featured on a soundtrack.
  •         These are typically harder to film than a performance video as locations, actors, mise-en-scene etc. needs to be thought of more carefully. However, these videos suggest many themes to the audience.
  •      A danger of creating these is that if the video follows the lyrics too closely, it can be seen as too cheesy and unoriginal.

Conceptual Music Videos

Conceptual videos are usually a lot harder to film and are unusual; they’re mostly based around special effects (SFX).
  • The use of FX means that the videos are usually more expensive to shoot along with them being harder to film.
  • Few videos are conceptual as they are harder to follow along with and aren’t relatable compared to narrative based videos. Some music videos now combine conceptual with other types of video.
An example of this is Thunder by Imagine Dragons:
